Cala el Crit is a small cove that contains in its name a dramatic legend based on the time of looting pirates who lived around the Mediterranean during the XVIth, XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries. Located in Mont-ras just in front of Formigues Islands, between Palafrugell and Palamos, it is part of the short coast line that occupies this little village of Middle Costa Brava.

Cala el Crit, in Mont-ras, Costa Brava, is a virgin creek that hides a very dramatic legend

The story that all the locals know is maybe a legend, although the data given are so specific and the situation so veridical in the days when these events happened, that we can ensure that similar events occurred along the Costa Brava in these centuries so dangerous for the inhabitants.

At that time, because of the thick fog prevailing on the sea, pirates boat took refuge in the Cala Font Morisca, also in Mont-ras. Always lurking farmhouses where steal or families to kidnap to take as slaves to Africa, the pirates heard the crowing of a rooster, which indicated the presence of a farmhouse nearby: Cal Gall Peric.

They went to the farmhouse and found a family with two daughters. One of the pirates decided to take one of them, very beautiful, so he forced and dragged her to the nearby boat. In the struggle the desperate girl bit the finger’s pirate who, full of rage, killed the girl on the beach with his sword. The girl’s terrifying scream (crit is the catalan word for scream, cry, yell, shout) was so loud that it was heard miles around. From this fact comes the name of the cove. The pirate took the entire family as prisoners and burned the house, leaving the corpse of the beautiful girl on the beach.

A young girl was killed by the pirates in this cove, following the story of Cala el Crit

Cala el Crit is not an enclosed cove. To the north we find a set of rocks washed by the sea, making it attractive for diving, and south a nice rocky coastal path take us to a very beautiful set of coves as Cala Estreta and finally Es Castell Beach.

Cala el Crit, in Mont-ras village, near Palamós, is located in a very natural environnement, next to other coves you can reach through the coastal path

Well, that’s all we had to tell you about Cala el Crit. It’s not a creek that you will find by chance, you must visit to see her specifically because it is quite hidden, but its natural beauty and history worth it.

Legend tells us that when Pirene, Pyrenees daughter, after being released from Alcies fire, left the mountains to see the coast she ordered her servants to find a small beach where to build her brand new home.

Cala Fosca, in Palamós, Girona, Costa Brava

They run along the coast from north to south in search of that place to settle. They passed through the Gulf of Roses, which was considered too large for the small shelter she sought, she intented to settle in the Aiguablava creek, in Begur, though the mountains surrounding it reminded her too much to her former home.

The Calella and Llafranc beaches tempted her at first, however, she was not completely decided until a breakdown in her ship forced her to stop next the Formigues Islands, in Cap Gros, where, off the boat, she fell in love with the fine sand of the beach and its softness.

The black rock in front of the Cala Fosca beach

And there, next to the waves caresses, she asked her entourage to erect her castle. And so they did, they built a small paradise on her image, with orchards and gardens. Local fishermen were captivated both by the princess beauty and joy, and they offered her the best fish of the sea. She, in return, exhibited them her sympathy and songs.

Cala Fosca, in Palamós, has clear waters

However, the feudal lord who had his castle in the nearby beach of Es Castell, was so in love with the girl that sent embassies to ask for her hand. However, Pyrene had offered her heart to the boy who had helped her to escape from the fire in the mountains, so she was obliged to refuse the gentleman proposition. He, slighted and angry at the rejection of the young princess, and after several threats, burned one night the girl castle and her entourage, reducing all them to ashes.

The castle of our princess was reduced to a set of ruins, which were covered by the Mediterranean waves over the centuries. Just a black rock, which rises in the middle of the beach, has been able to stay throughout the centuries.

Cala Fosca is one of the most popular beaches in Palamós through the summer

The evil lord castle is still preserved at the top of the hill, to the north of Platja Fosca, with its half-destroyed towers and walls.
