Tamariu is an ancient fishermen village, within the municipality of Palafrugell, along a small beach of coarse and golden sand, about 180 meters long and 40 meters wide.
Described by the most important Empordà writer, Josep Pla, as “distant paradise” and “quintessence of freedom”, Tamariu retains all the charm and welcomes the visitors in an idyllic natural environment. In low season only 300 people live in this quite place.
The name of the beach comes from the trees “tamarius” (french tamarisk) growing on both sides of the torrent. Still some specimens of them are preserved on the boulevard along the beach. The origin of the village is very old, since its existence is mentioned in Catalonian Royal Chronicles of Ramon Muntaner, 13th century. The beach is a small bay and provides almost all services that can be offered. In addition to showers you’ll find bars, restaurants, diving clubs (the sea bed of the creek is very rich), sailing club rentals, kayaks, etc. It is a crystal clear water beach.
The creek has on both sides two interesting small spots. One is Cala dels Lliris, little creek about 45 meters length which still keeps an old 19th communal hut where fishermen keep their fishing tack.
The other corner, this time to the right of the Tamariu creek, always looking out to sea, is the Cala Aigua Dolça (literally “sweet water creek”), just 25 meters in length and which is accessed by the pathway that runs along Tamariu Beach. In this cove you’ll find the water source of the same name. Beyond lies Punta Rubia, a little rocky cape.
On both sides of Tamariu continues the coastal pathway that leads to the other bays of Palafrugell: Aiguaxelina, Cala Pedrosa, Llafranc, Calella… it offers an excellent opportunity to walk through it enjoying the exceptional viewing points that it offers next to the sea.
The marine neighborhood of Tamariu celebrates its annual festival on August 15th, and it includes performances, foam party, watermelon and waterfowl hunting balls, evening concerts and Havananeras Song Festival.
